It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

OK, maybe it's not, but it's beginning to be the time when we start thinking about Christmas.

I blogged about this last year and some of you expressed an interest in the idea but it was a little late then. I recently got the info in the mail for this Christmas so I thought I'd post again now before I forget.

It's time once again for the World Vision Christmas Catalogue. Have you ever thought that you'd like to give someone 3 little piggies for Christmas? What about a cow? How about stocking a classroom with school supplies or a medical clinic with medicine? You can do all that here.

There is also a link for requesting information for doing group fundraising in your business.

I love this catalogue!

Last week, I had a thought occur and wondered if anyone has an opinion.

With Laura in school this year, I already had a thought of 'teacher Christmas gifts'. Not sure what to do about that.

Also, with a mother-in-law who's a teacher, I know she gets a lot of chocolates and knick-knacks (which are great--don't get me wrong other parents who do this!!)

I wondered how goofy it would be to buy a World Vision catalogue gift on behalf of my child's teacher. (It's not quite like "The Human Fund" from Seinfeld!)

I just looked through it a bit though, it is a bit pricey for us--we are actually the few rare parents that don't go big for Christmas! We don't usually spend that much on our own kids, because they already have so much. I guess this is going to kids with almost nothing though.

Sorry Sue, hope you don't mind me using your blog comments for this!

No problem at all.

I always love going to Jerilee's house on the last day of school before Christmas or summer vacation. It's really interesting to see all the stuff she gets. She does get a lot of chocolates and knick knacks, like you said. She also gets candles (reasonably priced gift)or gift certificates for restaurants. Some families spend a huge amount on the gift certificates, others spend less. She can often combine several gifts for one night out.

I love the idea of using the World Vision catalogue for something like that, but like you say, the least expensive gifts are still pricey for a teacher gift.

Does that help?

Can anyone order this catalogue? Or do I have to be a professional group or something? I think it's a wonderful idea.

Hi Why,

Nick and I have done this personally. You don't need to be from an organization. Obviously some of the gifts are geared more towards organizations (like stocking a medical clinic), but a lot of the animal gifts are perfect for families. The tax receipt we received said "Two Hens and a Rooster" on it. We loved that!

I'll put my Christmas request in now - what I'd like more than anything is if people donate to my Panama project for Feb. 07. More details will follow on my blog soon.

World Vision is a good organisation, right? I mean, you can be pretty sure that whatever donations will make it to the right people and not be used to fund some African civil war?

Why, it is a very reputable organization. With their child sponsorship porgrams, they have one of the highest percentages of money that goes right to the child. Each organization keeps some for their administrative costs, but Worldvision is one of the best.

They also have their 2005 annual report available on line if you want to see how they spend their money. Go to worldvision.ca and then click on "about us". You'll be able to see the annual report from there.
